Overseas websites periodically mention some strange facts about the mysterious land of Australia. The dangerous and wild animals seem a popular topic. But the lists are often sensationalized, even if there are some particularity poisonous snakes and spiders in the country. These lists seem to simultaneously arouse some fear and fascination, a bit like a cheap horror thriller. Despite the danger of the animals people seem more inclined to visit Australia. In truth, as every Australian realizes, is that the danger of local animals is very low.

Box Jellyfish
This is deadly – one specimen has enough poison to kill 60 people. But the death toll is low, partly because attacks are infrequent, partly because of the anti-venom created.
Box Jellyfish will not attach covered skin. A wetsuit will prevent any stinging. If an individual is stung the wound is partly treatable with vinegar, which at least prevents the situation growing worse.

Sharks
Australia and the USA are high on the list of shark attacks, but the total number of fatalities and attacks is very low. There is less than one fatality per year. There are more than 3000 drownings for every fatal shark attack.

Snake
Australia has many of the deadliest snakes, but fatalities are rare. Despite the fact that snakes are quite poisonous and do live in all habitats (including cities) there are quite few problems. Anti-toxins do exist.

Sydney funnel web spider
This is actually very vicious, and deadly poisonous. But a treatment was developed many years ago. There has not been a death since the early 1980s.

Salt Water Crocodile:
These are a legitimate threat. Tourists should avoid their habitat, as crocodiles will aggressively defend their territories. There are one or two fatalities each year. Outside their natural habitat the crocodile is never encountered.
Tourists interested in crocodiles can see them in zoos and eat them at some restaurants.
