The old aphorism is to work smarter not harder. For travel this includes carful packing rather than heavy cases, which really is hard work. It is mildly frustrating to take items on vacation that you never use; it is very frustrating to get to the destination wishing you had thought to pack that item you need right now. Some advice and forethought can reduce these frustrations.
What Not to Bother with.
Hairdryers
I’ve seen people carry hairdryers overseas only to realize that they don’t work with the local power supply. Don’t even think of trying to use an adapter, the different voltage will blow up the device.
Most hotels have a hair dryer. Else, buy a small portable one, perhaps at the destination.
Excessive Camera Gear.
If the point of your vacation is to take photos then you can pack your full kit. Else, take a reliable camera and plenty of memory cards. A monopod that folds up into 20 cm stick can prove useful, and hardly takes up room. Carrying a small camera around your neck keeping a monopod in a back pocket should be enough for 90% of trips. You want to keep your hands free. You might just you your camera phone.
All Those Shoes.
A pair of comfortable and durable walking shoes will work for most of the vacation. Wear these rather than pack them! A second pair for going to a restaurant is also a good option. But unless you have specialist shoes for sailing, diving, geological trips or mountain climbing we suggest you leave your other footwear at home. Buy some cheap thongs, beachwear and slipper at the destination that’s appropriate for your particular vacation.
Towels
Sometime there are nessary for the beach. Other vacations don’t require them. Almost any hotel provides towels. Else, buy a cheap towel when you arrive. Towels take up more room than you realize.
Hair Care Products.
This is more of an issue than ever with restriction on liquids in planes. If you really do require a certain product, take sample sized bottles. Small plastic bottles are available at dollar shops.
Books
Buy a few second hand novels or book of stories, but keep it to a minimum.
Technology
We tend to accumulate multiple devices, and they overlap in use. Take the smallest tablet or use your smartphone. Remember the charger.
