Seasickness is quite rare on cruise ships under normal conditions; the large size of the boat removes almost all of the rocking motion that causes the problem. But if seasickness is an issue then use a cabin in the middle of the ship, which has the lease rocking of all.

It is easy to lose the key or keycard to your cabin. Prevent this by buying a lanyard.

There may be a charge for using Wi-Fi on board. This is cheaper if you book in advance.

Cruise Ship now often have apps that let you check your account and look for complimentary services of events.

There is often a cruise ship app that lets you text/call other members of you party.

Pack a power board. Many rooms only have one power outlet, so a power board lets you (and your cabin mate) use several devices at one. A power board with USB outlets is a bonus.

There is often a USB point on the Television. Use this for charging your phone or device.

Keep electronic devices to a minimum. As long as you can take photos and connect to Wi-Fi you won’t need too much else.

You won’t get your luggage delivered to your cabin straight away, so have a day bag with a few basic items to use for the first few hours of the trip.

Pack a portable clothesline for drying a few items.

Pack a few magnetic hooks co you can hang up items in your cabin.

Separate your luggage items with sealable plastic bags – sock in one bag, underwear in another …etc. Have one bag for laundry items.

Have a sealable plastic bag to keep your phone and other devices dry when near the pool.

Use luggage that is small enough to store under the bed. It is inconvenient to have luggage taking up space in a small cabin. If you leave the luggage open under the bed you can use this for storage, rather like a draw.

A collapsible organizer is good for storing clothes.

A battery operated light, like a candle, is a good option if you don’t want the cabin lights at full intensity.

Some ships have a sale with their on-board shops on the last day of the cruise. This may be the best time to shop.

Our airport shuttle bus will pick up and drop off at the Sydney cruise terminal when nessesary. Use a shuttle to avoid hassle, avoid traffic by using the bus lanes, and to make sure there is plenty of room for luggage.

Arrange for appropriate VISAs or ETS before leaving. Contact the embassy for each country.

Not learning a few local customs before visiting a foreign country. You might offend a dress code.

Understand tipping. Sometimes this is expected. Sometimes it is seen to be an insult.

Over packing. There a weight limits for luggage on planes. And you can’t wear all those clothes at once. Choose the few correct items and just take them.

Check the weather forecast, but be prepared for the worst because the forecast is sometimes wrong.

Making the mistake only trying the familiar things. The whole point of being on holiday is to get away from all that. Try a few different flavours of ice cream. Ask for local recommendations.

Spending all your time on the smartphone. Use the net connection to find some good locations to visit, and by all means take photos. But your phone is a means to an end.

Direct booking of hotels and online reservation sites both have their advantages. Use both.

Make sure the passport is renewed for at least 6 months. Some countries won’t let you in without at least 6 month on the passport.

Register with smart traveller.gov website.

Notify your bank of your travel plans. They might block your card if it is used overseas.

Electronics power systems are different overseas. USB cables are universal. By a local USB charger for you devices. Or use USB on a hotel TV.

Book at least the first night at a hotel.

Buy travel insurance. If something goes wrong you will need this.

Make copies of all documents including your passport. Email these to yourself so you can always access them online.

Star adjusting for the time zone change before you leave to avoid jet lag.

Make sure to adjust or suspend your mobile plan. Don’t pay for your phone while overseas.

There a limits on liquids when traveling. Plans allow 3.4 ounces. Put all containers filled with liquid on sealed plastic bags.

Either make sure your credit card works overseas, or arrange for a travel card. Don’t use money changers at the airport.

Remember that you can buy some items at your destination. You can buy some decent walking shoes.

Get vaccinations were necessary. Having these well in advance will prevent side effects on the plane.

Double check flight times.

Always leave an hour between connecting flights. And collect and re-check your luggage form the first plane to the second.

Use a Sydney airport shuttle bus to make sure you are on time for your flight, and so you can be collected on your return journey. A Sydney airport shuttle means you can relax, even sleep, on your journey.

Sydney is a surprisingly popular tourist spot. It is ranked in the top ten most liveable cities in the world. And it is extremely popular with visiting students. The housing prices are fairly high, but they is of little concern for visitors. There is plenty to see and do.

Sydney CBD. A fine place to stay because it is near many of the city attractions. The Rocks, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay with the Opera House, the Pitt Street Mall.

The Rocks – the area fist settled 200 hundred years ago. This is near the water, and provides one of the best views of the Bridge and Opera House. Plenty of little craft shops, boutiques, weekend markets and cafes. Some fine hotels too.

Central Station. This connects to all the suburban and country trains, as well as the busses and interstate coaches. Accommodation for backpackers.

Darling Harbour. Hotels, museums, Parks, fancy shopping, all sorts of restaurants, the world’s largest Imax cinema (when they finish rebuilding it). And some of the best hotel accommodation. You could spend a week vacation here.

China Town and Paddy’s Markets. Shopping. Near Darling Harbour.

Harbour bridge – iconic scene. You can walk across the bridge for free. See the museum in the tower near Milson’s Point. Or take the (rather expensive) Bridge climb tour.

Circular Quay – the Opera house, or take a ferry ride to see the Harbour. Travel to Luna Park or Darling Harbour.

Bondi Beach. One of countless beaches around Sydney

Queen Victoria Building. The fancy shopping mall. Right next to town Hall station, one stop from Central Station.

Botanical Gardens. Natural flowers, plants and gardens

Sydney Airport Shuttle Bus

Take a Sydney airport shuttle to make your trip so much easier. Always be on time and travel in style.

We adapt to the situations we find ourselves in. Those who travel a lot learn a few tricks to make things easier. The rest of us can save some time by learning from their experience.

Flight travel apps keep you up-to-date with information and alerts about flight delays, gate changes, cancellations, check in availability, upgrades and possible refunds. Some will let you download your entire itinerary.

The right packing and luggage. A moderate size case with the right supply of socks and underwear covers most occasions. Add one or two extra items that are appropriate for the destination. Avoid packing those items that never gets used.

There is no real need to nay electronic items other than one phone device. Make sure you can charge this via USB. Other electronics won’t work on foreign power systems.

Electronic check-in – saves so much time. Great if there is no checked luggage.

Look at where locals eat and socialize at the destination. You can find a lot about this by browsing online. Many great restaurants are out there, only not on the tourist circuit.

Advise the credit card company ahead of time, telling them when and where you will be overseas. Some companies will cancel you card if it is used overseas, assuming that it has been stolen.

Travel cards are good for paying in foreign countries. You have money put on them before you leave and use them as you travel. There are no further fees and alterations in the exchange rate will have no impact.

Have some downtime.

Plan your trip and sleep time so that you can avoid jet lag and adapt to the local clock. You can recover 90 minutes time difference per day.

Register with smarttraveller.com.au

Use moisturizer with sunblock on the plane.

Earplugs or noise cancelling headphones are great for quite traveling on a plane.

Make use of stopovers to visit other countries.

Airport Shuttle

Use an airport shuttle bus to make sure you never miss a flight on your departure, and to be collected on your return journey. Travel in comfort form the moment you leave your home.

The inside of an aircraft is an artificial environment, so human beings might find that they don’t quite adapt too easily to these artificial conditions. Low humidity, low air pressure, constant background noise and increased radiation will have their effect.

Flu and Colds

Having many people in a confined space means being exposed to a lot of germs, so there is a fairly high chance of getting a cold. The dry air also increases the risk, though the air filtering in most modern aircraft will help lower the risk.

Trays, floor and Seat.

The previous passengers will leave germs. The food tray is often the worst offended. Some hand sanitiser and disinfectant wipes will help.

Dry Air

The low humidity (dry air) on a plane is inevitable. Some people will find that their skin feels very dry after a few hours, other find their skin overcompensates by getting more oily.

Some moisturizer can make a big difference to you skin, especially if you travel frequently. And drink a reasonable amount of water.

Radiation

When flying high you are not protected by the Earth’s atmosphere, so you are exposed to more radiation. Sunscreen will help. Light sunscreen with moisturizer is perhaps the best option.

Flat Tasting Food

The dry air and low pressure affects your sense of taste. This is at least part of the reason why airline food tastes a little flat. But we can mostly avoid the issue if we stick to savoury foods and tomato juice and avoid anything sugary or salty.

Blood Circulation

Sitting still for hours can cause cramps and other circulations problems. In extreme cases it can cause blood clots, especially in the legs.

Loose clothing and compression socks go a long way to preventing circulation problems. Exercise and good diet also make a big difference.

Bloating

If we drink carbonated drinks and fatty food during or even before the flight we risk a bloated stomach.

Air Pressure

The air pressure changes as we gain or lose altitude. This can cause pressure on the ears. Chewing gum during take-off and landing will help.

Sydney Airport Shuttle Bus

An airport shuttle bus is a convenient way to get your group and all the luggage to the airport on time and in comfort.

Now all you have to do is get yourself and your travel party and all your combined luggage to the airport.

Sydney Airport Transfers are the better alternative to public transport, or trying to fit everything in a relative’s car.

An airport shuttle bus means you can leave in the earliest hours of the morning and still get some rest while traveling in the back of the shuttle bus. It also means not having to worry about a ride home on the return journey, when you probably have a touch of jetlag.

It doesn’t hurt to find the best shuttle bus available.

Can they guarantee you will be there on time, every time?

Get the tight size vehicle. If you have several people you will really need a decent sized shuttle, especially when you factor in luggage.

Or if it is only a few travellers in your party you can feel very comfortable in a luxury sedan.

Human beings were not designed to fly. Nor were we designed to sit still, cramped up for several hours waiting to reach a destination. But as we do often find ourselves putting up with these conditions because reaching the destination is important, so we can do a few things to make the flight more bearable, perhaps even enjoyable.

Wear comfortable shoes. You will usually wear these shoes the entire flight. Or you will want something easy to remove. Consider Shoes with Velcro.
The floors of planes are no cleaner that the outside ground, so it is best not to go barefoot.

Tight clothing is a mistake. You will be uncomfortable after an hour or two, and have no way to relive the discomfort.

Contact lenses don’t lend themselves to air travel as the environment is too dry. Use them when you arrive at your destination.

Skin Moisturizer is a good idea, the plane environment will be dry. If you are sitting by the window get a moisturizer with SPF 15+ or better sunscreen, because the UV light is strong when you are flying high.

Get a good jacket that you can put on or take off as the temperature changes. It might be cold at the point of arrival, or cold in the plane when the lights are out. The pockets of jackets are convenient for carrying items on a plane, or when putting all the items through the security X-ray.

A loose cotton pair of leggings under your regular jeans or trousers will keep your legs warm when it is cold, yet still be comfortable when the weather is moderately warm. But make sure that leggings are loose, because tight leggings will cut off or reduce blood circulation, which actually makes us colder.

Circulation in your feet and legs are an issue when you sit still in a plane for several hours. In extreme cases this can lead to Deep Vein Thrombosis. Compression socks will go a long way to preventing this.

Thinsulate clothing is a good option for the cold. It is warm, but not bulky.

Earplugs or noise cancelling headphones will go a long way to reducing the rumble of a plane’s engines, which is an issue long term. Don’t wear the earplugs when the plane is ascending or descending.

Wi-Fi looks to become an increasingly common feature in planes, to the point where they may remove all the other forms of entertainment. Pack at least one internet / Wi Fi device so you can watch films while flying.

Sydney Airport Shuttle Bus

Those arriving in Australia from the Northern Hemisphere sometimes forget that it is winter in the southern parts of the world. And like locals they will have to dress for the climate.

Some winter warmth tips include:

A heavy jacket. This is the most basic thing for cold weather, and sometimes it is enough on its own to keep us warm. Look for something that blocks the wind, which knitted wool will not do.

A trench coat, reaching down past the knees is a good option. A jacket with a hood is also a good idea.

Gloves make all the different to our hands, even if they are thin and simple in design. Leaving a pair of gloves in every jacket pocket is not a bad idea. This means you have a winter option all in one package.

Mittens with a fold down top that leave the fingers free to use electronic devices are one modern option.

Long Johns, simply long underwear beneath trousers, are a fine option for many men. The only trick is to make sure the garments are loose. Tight garments will reduce circulation in the legs, which actually makes us colder!

Thick stocking are one option for women, but once again the stocking must not be too tight as they cut off circulate in the legs and make us colder.

Hats are recommended. The old idea about losing most of the body heat through the head is exaggerated, but we will lose heat if we leave the head uncovered. A hood on a jacket is often enough.

If we forgo a hat, or only wear something on the very top of our head, we might want to have something to keep out ears warm. A band that wraps around our head is often sufficient for this. We can leave this in a jacket pocket ready for use.

If your stay in Sydney is brief, consider buying second hand clothes. St Vincent DePaul and the Anglican OpShop always have a few bargains. And reject / dollar stores have many small items 9gloves and hats) for only a few dollars.

It is a good idea to keep moisturizer with a mild sunscreen (SPF15+) for use in winter. Wind and winter Sun will be harsh on skin.

Airport Transfers Sydney

Talk to your driver on Sydney airport transfers for advice on tourism or weather when arriving is Australia.

Souvenir collecting is fine. But photos are hard to beat. Images of foreign lands with you family and traveling companions show what a holiday is all about. We believe that experiences are better than possessions, especially good experiences with other people. But decent photos manage to be experiences and possessions.

Early and late photos can be worth the effort. Sunrises and early morning light work well for almost any scene. Sunsets are also worth photographing, as a late night shots of city light.

Look up the locations you intend to visit. Find the classic sites to photograph, and try to find the lesser known sites as well. There are always some fine images to be taken at these places. Google earth can give you some good ideas.

Try to go beyond stoke images and generic photos. Just the act of incorporating a few travel companions into the image will help.

Rule of thirds. There is no universal formula for a good image, but if you divide the viewfinder image into nine equal boxed (hortizontal and vertical lines at the one third and two third points) you can get a nicely balanced image by matching the scene to these proportions.

The golden ratio is another proportion that the human eye finds pleasing. This is a rectangle of 1 : 1.618. Many photo are cropped to this proportion. Many buildings have this underlying their design. Photos based on this will tend to look neat, though there are other possibilities that break these guides.

Photos at eye level are a little predictable. Try shooting up from ground, or any angle trick that works for that particular scene.

Try using archways, bridges and other items to frame the people in the photos, or to frame other items.

Foreground, sometime just an overhanging branch, can make a distant shot much better.

Use a tripod or a monopod. These are now super light-weight, and very handy for some scenic shots or anything where you have to zoom in. Monopods take almost no time at all to use.

Digital memory is cheap, so carry plenty of memory cards. Don’t be afraid to experiment with several different shots of a site – you only have to show other people the images that work.

Find how your camera can take photos in low light. You will need this for caves, northern lights, and many night shots.

Don’t be afraid to Photoshop the images afterwards. This isn’t cheating; as long as you make the images a good representation of the sites you saw than Photoshop is working to your advantage.

Some Photoshop software will let you combine several identical images, so you can combine several photos of a building to remove the crowd of tourists.

Keep you camera on you at all times. You never know when a good photo opportunity will arise.
